Instead of a lazy afternoon listening to albums, they play the entire album and record it.

Beck’s Record Club Vol 1: The Velvet Underground & Nico [Beck’s Record Club, 1CD]

Studio sessions recorded in June 2009 in excellent SBD stereo.

They had a lot of fun recording The Velvet Underground & Nico. Beck’s idea was to have a spontaneous recording session, warts and all, and then post the video of said session on his website. Fans could follow the sessions track by track.

We share in Beck’s and the other musicians’ generous spirit of giving and offer you a chance to download these tracks at the best possible quality. The internet has tapped into the individual’s community spirit to share his talent to all. Just as before, a long, long time ago, you don’t have to buy music.

Thanks go out to Beck and his friends.

Thanks to RandyB for sharing these tracks on the net.

New Jersey 2009 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Count Basie Theatre, Red Bank, New Jersey, December 17, 2009. Good to very good audience recording, with very enthusiastic audience participation.

Since the release of Phil Spector’s A Christmas Gift For You in 1963, this album (considered a relative flop when it first came out) is now seen as an essential holiday favourite (probably as much as the one by the Do-Re-Mi Children’s Chorus is for the younger crowd).

Already stars in their own right, the album re-emphasised Darlene Love and Ronnie Spector’s status as soul queens and it’s a great pleasure to listen to them re-visit their  hits. While Ronnie has her regular Christmas show, it’s a bonus to see Darlene and Ronnie together in this show – this is the first time they shared the stage in more than 15 years. The gig was a benefit for the Boys and Girls Clubs on Monmouth County.

After almost one year in office, Barack Obama is well on the way to be America’s greatest Republican president. Commentator and author Saul Landau helps you count the ways…

After eleven months in office, Barack Obama has hardly revolutionized – or even altered – the major dysfunction that confronts our system. A man of obviously good values – read his books and speeches – he has yet to show convictions. He has tinkered to keep terrible problems from getting much worse – a kind of political plumber without access to equipment that would redo the entire system.

Like his other war-time predecessors, he used the trite phrase “in our vital national interest” to justify sending 30,000 more men and women to fight for Afghan President Karzai, a rare man worthy in his own lifetime for inclusion in the Guinness book of records – for corruption. Karzai amused the public by pledging to eliminate all corrupt practices. Obama appeared to believe him.

Stanford Campus 1985 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA, May 11, 1985. Very good KZSU FM radio broadcast.

Despite the nostalgia and the memory of listening to one of the top bands of college radio, probaby more than anything else, the Long Ryders today remind the listener of the promises of what could have been. It’s not the innocence in the music but the joy in the playing that comes through.

The 3-D effects can be quite startling and Jim Carrey is fairly well restrained in Robert Zemeckis’ A Christmas Carol but about the time when Marley’s ghost appears the animation starts going wrong. As Critic After Dark Noel Vera says, perhaps it’s time for Hideo [Ringu] Nakata to helm this seasonal gothic favourite.

Robert Zemeckis’ A Christmas Carol (2009) opens with a beautifully textured leatherbound book, a watercolor illustration that morphs slowly into a horrifyingly textured image of the deceased Marley, cloth binding his jaw shut, pennies covering his eyes.

Enter Scrooge (Jim Carrey), checking Marley for signs of life. When the undertakers put out an outstretched hand for tips, Carrey plays up Scrooge’s tightfistedness to the hilt; you would think he was extracting a back molar from out of his jaw the way his fingers trembled, as he extracted coins out of his purse.

Another expertly compiled disc of rarities from the early days of Manfred Mann.

Abbey Road Commercial Test + 2 [no label, 1CD]

Excellent mono SBD. Recorded in 1963.

This is the complete Abbey Road Studios “commercial test” by Manfred Mann. Recorded in 1963, this features the line-up heard on the first two EMI singles: Paul Jones (lead vocal, harmonica), Manfred Mann (keyboards), Mike Vickers (guitar, saxophone), Mike Hugg (drums) and Dave Richmond (bass).

The idea of this compilation is so that with the EMI four-CD set “Manfred Mann – Down The Road Apiece” and the Rykodisc soundtrack CD “What’s New Pussycat” (which has an alternate take of “My Little Red Book”), that you will have the complete EMI recordings of Manfred Mann.

Note: Thanks to Phil Cohen for sharing the lossless tracks.

01 – 06 Why Should We Not (takes 1-6)
07 – 08 I Don’t Want To Know (takes 5-6)
09 Let’s Go
10 – 11 Don’t Ask Me What I Say (takes 2-3)
12 Brother Jack
13 Without You
14 Do Wah Diddy (long version, rare stereo mix)
15 She Needs Company (Version 2. Stereo remix from 1990)

Fans of Beck have been having a field day over the past five months or so when the singer-songwriter decided to do something spontaneous – record an album in a day – and put up the results on his Record Club page on his website (

The first project of the Record Club was the Velvet Underground & Nico album. Songs Of Leonard Cohen is the second project and for those who lack the necessary internet tools to record the audio off video clips, RandyB has made this compilation to be shared on the internet. Thanks RandyB.

Golfer Tiger Woods – good on the green, good for the advertising industry and perhaps, more importantly, as his mistresses say, good in the sack. While there are many successful “family men” with conservative reputations who lead complicated double lives, as sex therapist Dr Susan Block sees it, on some level, perhaps Woods wants to be caught.

I’m in the midst of a humongous move and have no time to even look at the news, let alone write about it. But how can I – how can anyone – avoid the Erotic Adventures of Tiger Woods? It’s a soap operatic porno reality show streaming live before our eyes, ears, sanctimonious sensibilities and deep voyeuristic desires.

At first, I thought, so what? Another sports superstar is caught having illicit sex with a few different mistresses? Well, more than a few. But is that such a surprise? So Tiger’s got wood! Sure, he presented himself as the honest, monogamous “Family Man” to score the most lucrative endorsements he could. But don’t all sports stars do that? And does anyone over 18 actually believe that any of these hot-blooded jocks really ARE that? I mean, isn’t Tiger’s active, messy sex life par for the course?

This is an excellent web journal. If you like Counterpunch, Information Clearing House and Alternet, this should be essential reading as well. All the news that fits these days are coming from alternative media. Join their mailing list.

Issue #101 of the London Progressive Journal has been published and can be viewed here:

– Chavez Calls for Systemic Change to Save Planet: Hugo Chavez has accused the world’s powerful countries of lacking the political will to take serious action on climate change, as Kiraz Janicke reports.

– The Lobby Within: A just and peaceful solution to the protracted Palestinian-Israeli conflict will only be possible when the US ceases to block every move made towards it, argues Ramzy Baroud.

– The Nightmare in Afghanistan Worsens: Following the 100th British death of 2009 in Afghanistan, Steve Jones argues that the unwinnable war in Afghanistan can never deliver social and economic progress to the Afghan people.

– Muslim Women Find Expression Through Cartoons: Iqbal Tamimi on how some Muslim women have overcome cultural marginalisation to express themselves through popular art.

– Justice for Western Sahara: Joanna Allan on the high-profile campaign to draw international attention to the plight of the people of the Western Sahara at the hands of the brutal Moroccan occupation.

The long and winding road of Bruce Springsteen.

Madison Square Garden 2009 – The Complete River [no label, 3CD]

Live at the Madison Square Garden, New York City, November 8, 2009. Very good audience recording.

By running through the entire River album, Springsteen might be reminding Obama to hold true to values that define Main Street, not Wall Street – decency, compassion and the brotherhood of the American community. Listening to this show, one realises something is amiss when it looks so easy for Springsteen to get the crowd on his side yet it is Obama whose popularity rating that is drastically dropping.
