One with Jimmy on it.

Michigan 1975 [no label, 2CD – Upgrade]
Live in Ann Arbour, MI; November 11, 1975. Ex SBD stereo. Some hiss but that’s all right. [We had previously shared an audience recording of this, this is the soundboard.]

Music history has recognised Bob Marley as the undisputed reggae great but it was Jimmy Cliff and the soundtrack to The Harder They Come that first pushed reggae forward in 1972. If you recall reggae songs, most likely they all were made popular by Jimmy Cliff – “The Harder They Come”, “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “Many Rivers to Cross” and his covers of Cat Stevens’ “Wild World” and Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now”.

Island, his record label, tried to position Cliff first as a pop star then as a badass rocker. He even recorded a great protest song with “Vietnam” in 1970. Then came the classic film and soundtrack that he recorded and starred in, The Harder They Come, which broke reggae internationally. This was followed in quick succession by a slew of albums Unlimited, Struggling Man, House Of Exile, Brave Warrior and Follow My Mind from 1973 to 1975. With each album, Cliff was competing in the music scene for popularity. Unsurprisingly, not a single of these albums are today easily available. Not even as a digital download, legal or otherwise.

Meanwhile, his nearest rival, Bob Marley, was building from strength to strength beginning in 1973. Marley laid a solid foundation with reggae music. All his albums are still in print. Listening to this concert by Cliff and his friend Joe Higgs, you can hear that struggle between reggae and soul, reggae and pop, reggae and rock.

This rare concert recording was shared by pablo at losslesslegs. Thanks pablo. Be grateful, we still have this piece of Jimmy Cliff.
