Reissues will never be the same again now that Verve has launched its collection of out-of-print albums as MP3 downloads on iTunes. From Clifford Brown’s Jam Session to The Complete Art Blakey on Emarcy, over 400 titles are listed in the Verve Vault. Yet this service smacks as another attempt by record companies to renege on their responsibilities, in the case, giving the attention they use to have in compiling reissues. You won’t get nice sleevenotes or bonus tracks (salvaged from the vaults) on the web. The notes are perfunctory and they are enough to make you weep. iTunes charges US99 cents per track.
