TOM ZE
KCRW 1999 [no label, 1CD]

KCRW, Los Angeles, California, USA, May 27, 1999.

On paper, Tom Ze backed by Tortoise seems an unlikely pairing. Yet Chicago’s Tortoise were able to create an “experimental” backdrop to the Brazilian who is noted for his unorthodox approach to melody and instrumentation.

Already well known in the Tropicalia movement, alongside Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa and Os Mutantes, Tom Ze had a revival in the early ’90s when he signed on to David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label.

Tom Ze’s delivery is lyrical though the surprise is really prog-rockers Tortoise, who seem to subsume themselves into a Brazilian/world beat mode, as a result showing how versatile the group can be.
