FLEETWOOD MAC
New Haven 1975 [no label, 1CD]

Live in New Haven, CT, November 11, 1975. White Album Tour.

Fleetwood Mac’s White Album Tour continues and it’s two months since Largo and this set, which was broadcast on radio, does not look too different. Instead of Blue Letter, fans get to listen to Landslide but the performance does stand out, with Mick Fleetwood sounding very propulsive on the drums.

Perhaps at that time, bands did not expect albums and singles to chart immediately – the album only hit the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s chart a year after it was released, in 1976 – and the band needed to tour to sell potential hit singles such as Rhiannon and Landslide to the fans. Again, at the time, that seemed the only way. The White Album eventually sold five million copies and spawned hit singles such as Over My Head, Say You Love Me, Rhiannon and Landslide.

A crop of radio friendly songs, a bright breezy sound with a touch of sophistication (they called this adult contemporary pop), lyrics that appeal across a spectrum – from hippies to hard rock fans, and with Lindsay Buckingham who can still run rings around many guitar players, Fleetwood Mac had a winning formula that would see them become a mega-band over the next couple of years, with Rumours (1977) and Tusk (1979).
