The point-of-view shots might cause a headache but they put the viewer right in the middle of a splatterfest as The Butcher in Kim Jin-Won’s film gets down to his bloody business. Not exactly 3D but definitely in your face. Stephen Tan reviews.
True to life or true life? One of the conventions or assumptions of snuff films is that it is real – the video verite horror genre pushed to its limits into torture porn. But instead of having one camera filming the goings-on, Korea’s Kim Jin-Won’s The Butcher (2007) offers two points of view – the killer and the victim’s.
Thanks to movies such as The Blair Witch Project and latterly Cloverfield, The Butcher is off to an interesting start right from the beginning – like those first-person-shooter video games – showing someone urinating.
