DANNY FEDERICI R.I.P. 1950-2008

Bruce Springsteen’s website posted a note April 17, that “Danny Federici, for 40 years the E Street Band’s organist and keyboard player, died this afternoon, April 17, 2008 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City after a three-year battle with melanoma.”
The last time Federici played with the band was when he made a surprise appearance on stage March 20 at a Springsteen concert in Indianapolis.
“Danny and I worked together for 40 years - he was the most wonderfully fluid keyboard player and a pure natural musician. I loved him very much… we grew up together,” Springsteen said on his website statement.
Federici was 58. It was his wistful accordian that serenaded 4th of July, Asbury Park [Sandy], one of Springsteen’s touching ballads.
And the boys from the casino dance with their shirts open like Latin lovers on the shore
Chasin’ all them silly New York virgins by the score
Sandy, the aurora is risin’ behind us
Those pier lights, our carnival life forever
Oh, love me tonight, for I may never see you again
Hey, Sandy girl… my baby
